There’s something beautifully full-circle about setting sail with family — especially when the occasion is a 60th wedding anniversary. Sixty years! My partner’s parents celebrated the milestone by gathering their grown kids (and spouses) for a week at sea aboard a Royal Caribbean ship departing from Baltimore. No kids, no chaos — just adults, laughter, and nightly piano bar sing-alongs.

🚢 Setting Sail

Cruising out of Baltimore is its own kind of nostalgia trip, especially when your entire travel crew was born and raised in the Chesapeake Bay area. As we sailed past familiar shorelines, childhood homes, and small villages, the family stories started flowing faster than the cocktails. It takes nearly six hours to clear the Chesapeake Bay, and during that time, we watched the sun set behind the remains of the F. Scott Key Bridge — a solemn but unforgettable sight — before passing under the stunning Bay Bridge. Almost every passenger ran up on deck to watch that golden moment together.

That first evening was just perfect. We all met in the dining room at our assigned table by the enormous windows, watching the sun dip below the horizon as the ship headed out to sea. The sky turned every shade of gold and pink while we shared our first dinner together — wine glasses clinking, stories flowing, and laughter carrying across the table. It was the kind of night that reminds you why family trips matter.

🎶 Life Onboard

After that first dinner, we started settling into ship life — finding our favorite spots, routines, and surprises along the way.

Royal Caribbean’s ships always find a way to blend fun and comfort. This one, smaller than their mega-liners, had all the charm of a floating boutique hotel — a good-sized theater, two pools (one adults-only), live music, and a spa that felt like it belonged in Miami rather than mid-Atlantic.

Every evening, our family gathered in the piano bar, where we closed out the night with cocktails and classic tunes. By the last night, we were practically part of the act.

One highlight? The sushi-making class — hands down the most delicious onboard activity I’ve ever joined. A Japanese chef led the session, and the best part? You get to eat your “project” afterward — which turned out to be an entire platter of sushi per person. 🍣 Perfection.

Cruises are their own little floating villages, complete with recurring characters. Ours included the captain and the skipper — a couple dressed in nautical outfits every single day — and a silver-haired dance-floor legend who never missed a beat. Line dancing, disco, swing — if there was music, he was there, and the crowd adored him.

I tucked into The Cuban Heiress (my perfect choice for a shipboard novel) and found my secret hideaway on a shaded deck below the main pool — a cozy nook with just enough sea breeze for reading, meditating, and pretending I’d discovered my own private yacht.

Early mornings were my favorite though — a quiet walk on the top deck as the sun rose over the Atlantic, a few fellow walkers and even one group practicing tai chi. Just the sound of waves, footsteps, and that hush before the ship wakes up.

🌊 Weather, Waves & a Wild Surprise

There was a hurricane forming east of Bermuda during our sailing week, but we lucked out. The storm shifted, and we sailed through only one day of mild chop leaving the Bay — the kind of rough sea a ginger chew can handle. But then came the wave.

As we neared Bermuda, the ship was struck portside by a rogue wave. In an instant, the ship tipped sharply, dishes and carts slid across dining rooms, and pool water cascaded onto lower decks. No one was hurt, thankfully — but talk about a once-in-a-lifetime experience! The crew kept their cool (mostly), and our waiter even came out afterward, plates in hand, asking, “What just happened?” 😂 By the time we returned home, the videos had gone viral.

🏝️ A Taste of Bermuda

Bermuda feels quietly elegant — warm, lush, and friendly. The island’s British roots peek through in the politeness of cab drivers and the charm of the pubs, but it’s the island spirit that really defines it.

If you only have one full day (which you will, since cruises from Baltimore give you just a split day and morning), plan wisely. I hopped the ferry to Hamilton for dinner at an Irish pub called Flanagan’s — fish and chips and cold beer with a view of the harbor. The next morning, I took a taxi to Horseshoe Bay to swim in 80-degree water on pink sand. A Cuba Libre in hand, salt on my skin — very Hemingway, very happy.

If you ever cruise this route, know that St. George closes up early (6 p.m.), so plan ahead or book a sunset catamaran or guided island tour instead of trying to rush across the island.

💫 Final Thoughts

Cruising from Baltimore to Bermuda is a blend of nostalgia, celebration, and pure relaxation — especially if you’re traveling with family. It’s smaller, more personal, and full of connection. I’d absolutely do it again.

Next up on my horizon? Exploring Alaska’s glaciers or the Mediterranean’s coastlines — maybe aboard one of Royal Caribbean’s mega-ships like the Icon or Oasis Series. Bigger ships, more adventures.

If you’re booking your first cruise, here’s my advice:

  • For families, start with the Icon Series — it’s a playground at sea.
  • For adults, go Oasis or Quantum Class — incredible dining and entertainment.
  • For wildlife and wonder, make Alaska your first big adventure.

And remember — sometimes the best travel moments are the ones you don’t plan.
